The Base Las Torres Trekking is one of the ultimate must-do experiences in Patagonia. This trail winds through native forests, rushing rivers, scrubland, and rocky terrain to reach one of the most sought-after views in the region—a demanding trek lasting approximately 9 hours (round trip) over a total distance of 22 km (13.6 miles).
Our adventure begins at 06:30 AM with a pickup in Puerto Natales. We will drive toward the northern sector of Torres del Paine National Park, arriving at the Laguna Amarga entrance. Here, we will complete the park registration process with our entrance tickets before continuing to the trailhead located in Reserva Las Torres.
At the starting point, we will gear up and receive a safety briefing from our lead guide. The guide will explain the proper use of trekking poles, as well as how to fit crampons and gaiters if necessary (these winter elements are provided when ice and snow are present on the trail).
The first hour and a half consists of a steady ascent—featuring a few gentler inclines and low vegetation—until reaching Paso de los Vientos (Windy Pass). From there, we begin a roughly 30-minute descent toward Refugio Chileno for a brief rest. The trail then continues for about an hour through lenga beech forests alongside the Ascencio River, which we will cross at several points and follow for much of the journey.
The final section features a 300-meter (980 ft) elevation gain over challenging, rocky terrain, starting with a short forested stretch for the first 25 minutes. The final push follows an exposed, gravelly path with no vegetation, gaining altitude rapidly with sweeping views of the valley.
Once we reach our goal directly in front of the awe-inspiring Towers, we will take plenty of time to enjoy lunch, take photos, and soak in the views. The descent and return to our vehicle follow the same trail back.
